Beaded Ornament Cover Tutorial

Okay. Here it is. It kind of sucks. But it is finally here! The lighting is pretty bad. If there is anything you need to ask please do. I’ll get better at this in time. But bear with me here. I DO not like talking or being on camera, so this is a big step for me!

I do not sell my covers, they are for personal use. So there is probably a RIGHT way to do this and then there is MY way. Winging it! If you are looking to sell yours, I would strongly advise buying a book or Instruction Guide from a store. I don’t follow any guide, so be forewarned.  :)

Try to purchase beading thread. I don’t use a thick thread because it makes it too hard to go through a bead again.Don’t use regular sewing thread, it is not strong enough.

Some people condition the thread before use by pulling it over a light bulb or through beeswax. I would if I was giving them away. Generally I just cut a long length and stretch the thread as hard as I can, from top to bottom. This prevents the thread from stretching after it is made. Then you will be left with a bunch of thread showing and a droopy cover!

First we start out with seed beads. I am using size 10/0 beads for the Main colour and a slightly larger bead (8) for the Accent just because that was what I had handy.

I am using two colours. Green = Main    Red = Accent

We need to make the loop that hangs around the top of the ornament. If you are using a different size ornament or beads, you will have to make changes in the amount you use. Just be sure to check that the loop fits before you continue!  :)

I will use 32 Main colour beads and 16 Accent Beads = 48 beads in all.

Using the accent beads makes a nice design but in truth, it makes it easier to work with. You don’t have to count each bead, all the time you just look for the accent bead and you know where you are going. I can’t be bothered to count beads all the time.

When tying the knot to form the top loop, I use a surgeon’s knot.

I will include typed instructions between every video. Sorry about the first one. I didn’t really want to talk and the music is blaring. I fixed this in other ones. But I’m in a rush. (as usual) I’m behind schedule. So the first video is a bit confusing. Sorry. If I get up all the parts by midnight, I’ll be amazed!

Lets go!

Take several feet of thread (I pull off about 4 or five feet but you can use less and use a knot when you need to add more. Just make sure the knot is between the beads, not shoved inside. You might have to go back through them and nothing is worse than getting stuck in a knot, it can break your bead too!

PART ONE WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS

Pick up 2 Main (Green) and 1 Accent (Red) bead.

Then 2 Main and 1 Accent. Continue this until you have used all 48 beads.

Take both ends of the string and tie a knot. This will form the Loop that goes around the top of the Ornament Cover. Leave a tail of thread at least 6 inches long. We’ll deal with it later.

Go through the next 2 Main beads, Accent Bead, 2 Main Beads and 1 Accent bead.

Your thread is now between a Main and Accent bead.

Pick up 5 Main beads, 1 Accent bead, 5 Main. We are going to put it through the 2nd Accent Bead you see. (skip one Accent bead)

o = Main (green)  x = Accent

ooxooxooxoo

Skip all the beads between the 2 bold Accent beads.

Keep going around the loop until you end up where you started.

The next step (warning turn down your volume) I am soooo sorry…this one is blaring loud!

I forgot :(

Written Instructions Part Two

Okay. We have now went around the entire loop. On the last one, pull your thread through the first Accent bead you started with. Now we want to pull the thread DOWN through the next five Main beads and one Accent bead of the new loops you have formed around the base loop.

Pick up 5 Main, 1 Accent, 5 Main

Just hop on over to the Red Accent Bead at the bottom of the next loop. (It will look pretty much like a line for now.)

Continue this until you end up exactly where you started.

Go through the Accent bead you started on.

Go down through the 5 Main beads and 1 Accent bead of the loop.

You will now be at the bottom of the first loop you made on the last step.

Now pick up 7 Main Beads, 1 Accent Bead, 7 Main Beads.

Go through the Accent Bead at the bottom of the next loop.

Continue until you complete going around entire loop, ending up exactly where you started.

To continue this cover go to part two

and then part three.

  1. Wow – I never even thought about stretching the thread first so that it won’t stretch later. That’s a perfect lamp for your beadcrafting. When you do the knots between beads to keep them in place, what type of knot do you use for that? I enjoyed seeing how you do this – it’s quite intricate but it is so beautiful when it is done – well worth it. I still can’t believe you don’t sell these. I think yours are way better than some I’ve seen for sale. LOL @ your Christmas music – I should have known I’d be hearing that! Also, I liked hearing your voice and your accent. I could listen to you talk all day. :)

  2. Hi Teeni! Yes, it is so important to stretch the thread. I learned the hard way.

The lamp has been my best investment so far for my beadwork and it was less that 20 dollars!

For the first loop I use the surgeon’s knot.

Just to keep things snug throughout the cover I don’t really use a knot. Just the same thing (I don’t know what to call it) as you do when you go to tie your shoes. A crossover? hehehe ?????

They are so easy to make once you get into it. It just seems complicated. And I am sure I make it seem much more complicated that it is….

Thanks for you compliments on my covers. I might sell them in my old age. When and if I ever retire. :)

LOL! I’ve been playing Christmas music since November.

Accent? Huh? I don’t have an accent! :) I can’t stand my voice. Ugh….You should hear me sing! It’s perfectly horrid! But I belt it out anyway! I had to stop myself from doing it on the video. :)

  3. I feel the same way about hearing my own voice, but you do have a very soothing voice, and I like the Christmas music. :D I’ve actually given some thought to making some bead and thread projects (top secret, don’t ask) and now you’ve given me some new things to think about and take into consideration. ;) If I ever get around to it I’ll be sure to post some pictures just for you. But don’t hold your breath. I have a “to do” list over a mile long.

  4. Oh, I know how to do that crossover knot thing. LOL. I don’t know what the proper name for it is either!

  5. @ Peter – A soothing voice? That’s a first! Well you just went to the top of my fav list!!! :)
Oh my gosh, I can only imagine what you have been thinking about with beads! Probably much the same as my husband! I’m not even going to repeat it. LOL! I’m glad I’m not the only one with a to do list that is piling up and gathering dust! :)

@Teeni – LOL, Teeni. But I only do one crossover, so I didn’t really want to call it a knot. Like a half knot… too funny! :)

  6. This is my first seed bead project e-v-e-r. Your instructions are the best. I’m only half done but it works up so-o-o cute. I’m using pearl main color and clear accent. I hope to make a few for presents. I crocheted a few ball covers with thread last year, so this will give my homemade gifts a little variety. Thanks so much for sharing your experience and knowledge. Best to you and yours.

  7. Oh, Frances. Thank you! That was my first attempt at a video tutorial. I hope to get better over time. I am planning to make an easier version of this at some point. But I am really glad that you were able to make sense of it and use it!

Pearl and clear…That will look stunning, I bet!

You’re quite welcome all the best to you and yours! :)

  8. Just my lil ol opinion but, I like your voice. To me, the music is distracting. (It is beautiful music.). Thanks for the inspiration…back to beading.

  9. Hi Frances. I agree…I’ll managed to get over being nervous because I would like to do quality video’s in the future. And thank you for saying you like my voice. I guess I should be happy just to have one and stop being so insecure about it.

I am so happy you are beading from it. That is cool! :)
